Robotech Chat: Connecting Manually
Last Updated: 24 Feb. 2003

Getting Started
Welcome to the information page for Robotech IRC chat!
To get started, you'll need a chat program on your computer that uses the IRC protocol. IRC (Internet Relay Chat) is a chat system that allows groups of people to talk with each other in "chatrooms" in real-time.

Required software :
On Windows PC's, we recommend using the very popular mIRC program. If you go to the mIRC homepage, there's a link to "download mIRC." Pick a link to download it from (any location is fine) and then you can install it on your computer. On Macintosh computers, we recommend using Snak, Ircle or Colloquy. Snak seems to be a nicer chat program, but if you don't purchase it online it only allows you to connect for 30 minutes at a time. Ircle and Colloquy are free chat programs.

Connecting to irc.robotech.com :
Once you've downloaded your chat program, open it and make a connection to the irc.robotech.com chat server. You'll also have to pick a nickname for yourself to connect to the server, so if you have a membership account on Robotech.com already, we highly recommend you use the same name on the server.

Finding a chatroom / channel :
Once you've connected to the chat server, connect to the robotech chatroom. Different programs have different ways of connecting to chatrooms, usually called channels. If there's a text input field on your chat program, you can type /join #robotech to connect to the Robotech channel or /join #elsalon to connect to the Spanish-language channel. On other programs, they'll have a listing of the available channels and you can pick one from a list. A password is not needed to connect to Robotech.com's chat server.

Basic Chat Terms
Here are some terms you might want to get familiar with in order to navigate your way around the world of chat:

IRC
IRC (Internet Relay Chat) is a multi-user chat system. It's not compatible with person-to-person instant messaging services seen utilized by AIM, AOL, ICQ, or MSN, but there are many programs out there that can do IRC chat, such as mIRC for Windows computers or Snak for the Macintosh.

server
A chat server is a computer that hosts all the chat activity. A chat server can have many channels in it. Robotech.com's chat server address is irc.robotech.com

channel
A channel is an online "chatroom" where several people can talk to each other all at once in realtime. Usually the name of the channel gives a suggestion about what the channel's topics are usually about.

topic
Besides the name of the chatroom, there can be a topic attached to a channel which is usually a short sentence or two. Only operators can change the topic of a channel.

operators
Also called ops for short, operators are people who've been granted moderator status. There are server operators (also known as opers) who have administrative powers over the whole server, and there are channel operators (also known as chanops) who have administrative power over the channel. Channel operators can kick troublesome people out of a channel or ban them if a member continues to cause problems. Server operators can kick or ban someone from the entire server. In mIRC, channel operators will have an @ symbol in front of their name. On other IRC programs, operators will have their names highlighted in different colors.

Basic Commands
Once you're in the chatroom, you can type away and chitchat with other Robotech.com members! However, there are some text commands that you can use to make your chats more enjoyable:

/nick
If you type this and then a new name afterwards, your nickname will be changed to the new one. For example, typing "/nick robotechfan" will change your nickname to robotechfan. Keep in mind that chatroom names can't have spaces in them.

/join
If you type this and then a channel (chatroom) name afterwards, you'll be connected to a new chatroom. In some IRC programs such as mIRC, you need to put a # in front of the channel name. For example, typing "/join #robotech" will connect you to the Robotech chatroom. In other programs such as Snak, you can type "/join robotech" without the # and you'll be connected to the Robotech chatroom.

/list
Typing this will give you a list of the available chatrooms.

/whois
If you type this and then the name of a person afterwards, you'll get some information about that member. For example, typing "/whois steve" will give you some info about Steve. In most chat programs, you can also right click on a member's name with your mouse and you'll have the option of getting the same info on them.

/me
This is a fun little command that allows you to act out some actions in the chatroom. For example, if my name is Joe and I type "/me eats a hamburger" everyone else will see "Joe eats a hamburger" on their computer screens.
