Crimson Guards: The SDF-1 takes off
Submitted on April 1, 2002 by CrmsnGrd321
As Corsair stared at the damaged Veritech that was his old friend Marshall, Lisa Hayes’ voice was heard over the tactical net. “All Veritechs be advised that the SDF-1 is preparing to take off.”
Corsair continued to look at the fallen machine. Then two red Veritechs walked up behind him and flanked him on each side. “Sir, did you get that?” asked Lieutenant April Astarte. There was no response from Corsair.
“Commander Phoenix, the SDF-1 is preparing to launch. Shouldn’t we provide cover?” asked April’s wingman Lieutenant Jess Gaylord. There was still no response from Corsair.
“Corsair!” yelled April.
“I heard you, Lieutenant. All Guard units, this is Guard 1. Protect the SDF-1 during launch,” commanded Corsair. All pilots gave the double click affirmative on the tacnet. “Move out, Lieutenant.”
“Yes, sir,” replied April.
She watched as Corsair transformed his Veritech to Guardian mode and left the area. April stood there and watched Corsair’s Veritech for a few seconds. She thought of the pain that he must be feeling. She turned her attention back to the fallen Veritech. It almost looked like a real human body if it wasn’t for the mechanical decorations.
“April, we have to go,” said Jess.
“You’re right. Let’s go.” They both transformed to Guardian configuration and left the holed Veritech on the battlefield. Another casualty left on the battlefield.
April and Jess both patrolled the city in Guardian mode looking for more Battlepods. After a few minutes, a warning came across the comm. channel. “Attention all Veritech squadrons, the SDF-1 is preparing to take off. Stay clear of the immediate area,” commanded Lisa Hayes.
“Are they serious?” asked Jess. Suddenly, the Earth began to shake as the anti-gravity generators on the SDF-1 were activated. Both April and Jess turned their attention to the SDF-1 as it slowly began to rise.
“I guess they are, Jess. Let’s get back to work. The sightseeing is over,” commanded April.
They continued down the road they were on. As they hovered down the street, an explosion rocked the street and both Veritechs crashed into nearby buildings.
April turned to see what had caused the explosion. All she saw were crumbling buildings and the SDF-1. “Jess, refresh my memory. But, didn’t the SDF-1 take off?” asked April.
“It was,” replied Jess. “April, scan up.”
April moved her sensors to the light blue sky and saw several black dots. “Are those what I think they are?”
“I think they are,” replied Jess.
“I can’t believe it. The anti-gravity generators ripped away from the SDF-1.” Suddenly, a building exploded behind April and her Veritech was showered with concrete.
“April, two enemy units behind the nearest building.” Jess was already laying down suppressing fire with her gun pod. While the two Battlepods were concentrating on Jess, April targeted the closest one and fired. The Battlepod exploded under a rain of laser fire and before April could target the next one, the area was suddenly covered with dust and visibility was reduced to zero.
“Jess, what’s going on?” asked April.
“I don’t know,” replied Jess.
April switched the display to infrared. As the display turned from dusty brown to red, she saw the Battlepod. She quickly targed it and fired. The Battlepod collapsed under the barrage. Once the Battlepod was down, April did a quick scan of the surrounding area. Then she noticed something was missing from the landscape. The SDF-1 was not at the dry dock. April looked up to see the SDF-1 rocketing towards space. “Well, it looks like Captain Gloval was able to get her up there.”
“I guess so,” said Jess.
“When you two are done gawiking, can you help us out over here?” asked Lieutenant Romav over the tac net.
“What’s your location and situation?” asked April.
“We are in a pitched fire fight with about 12 enemy units two blocks east of you.”
“We are on the way,” replied Jess.
April and Jess both righted their Veritechs and jetted to Romav’s location. When they got there, what they saw looked something out of one of the Global Civil War movies. On one side were 12 Battlepods. On the other side was the entire Crimson Guard squadron...or what was left of them.
