Again, there is much that I am not writing here because so much of what the reviewers said is exactly what I felt and thought as I viewed TSC.

Thanks for removing my comments. That's funny, I thought that you were actually asking for our opinions, not just filtering out the ones you like. BTW, you are the one that posted the link with the comments, I simply responded by agreeing with those comments.

I'm an original 1985 fan. I am 33 years old and a Naval Aviator. I consider myself a sophisticated and intelligent viewer. Partly because I was brought up on Robotech in the first place. Let me apologize in advance for my tone. I don't mean to insult or hurt feelings. I know a lot of people put a lot of time into this and are probably proud of it but...
1.STORY
I am not thrilled with the Haydonites being pegged as the new antagonists. They seem a bit Borging. Yes that is a hybrid word mixing "boring" with "Borg". I hate Star Trek.
2.PLOT/MOOD
Plot. Granted I've only watched it once, but I can't think of what it was other than to retell the original ending and then find Rick Hunter. I think the idea of destroying, what was that Space Station liberty?, was ludicrous. Why would you want to do that again?
I think I read somewhere that Lang and Exedore were killed off? Why would that be necessary? Where do you find out about that?
Mood. Fairly chipper for a show that sees several thousand people killed in a massive all or nothing space battle, and an entire alien race that has occupied Earth being vanquished into the ether...
3.CHARACTERS
-Maya as a member of the cast. Cool
-Marcus? Sure I guess. I like that he was related to Marlene, but why does everyone have to be related? Why not bring in some new blood?
-His buddy? A bit typical. Unnecessarily shallow. Would have been better served if he'd been the strong silent dedicated type rather than the flaky skirt chaser...kinda reminded me of haydne what his nuts from the New Star Wars failures.
-Scott? Obviously, but where was the command presence? The Strength? Very unfortunate that...
-Aerial...the impression you get from the original Canon series is that she isn't invited on this trip...
4.ANIMATION, 3D CG/2D AND CHARACTER DESIGN
Horrible. Very disappointing, very...not Robotech. Where is the consistency? Not a single nod to the actual "LOOK" of Robotech. 3D Mecha were awful. They look like someone scanned in the blocky Gakken Alpha toys. Transformations and CGI left the Mecha looking lifeless and inanimate. Ironic since this is an animated show.
Why do all the men have to be Roid ragers? Even Lunk in the original series didn't have veins and muscle definition popping out all over his body. Anyone taken anatomy?
Characters with retardedly large boobs cheapen the subject matter. How is anyone going to take this show seriously? Assuming you could manage to throw together a good story with depth and meaningful dialogue you just trash it by taking the low road. Does everyone have DD implants in the future? Just who are you making this show for? Original fans or the shallow flaky, noobs that haven't gotten it yet? Where is the maturity? This wasn't in the original formula, why does it have to be now?
Oh, and is spikey hair all the rage now? Did I miss the memo? And how does Jean Grant get her hair to do that?
5.SOUND EFFECTS/MUSIC
Average at best. They sound like the Special remastered Edition effects. I didn't like those either. Sounded like they were made on a cheap Casio keyboard. Where is the nod to the original sound effects? What was wrong with those?
6.VOICE ACTORS
Great to have some original voice actors. About the only thing that allows you to close you eyes and imagine this is Robotech...
7.MECHA/SHIPS DESIGN
The Haydonite mecha don't fit into the Robotech universe. What are they exactly? Their Capital ships are pretty plain. After 20 years this is what we get? They look like they were constructed with Legos. In fact the Haydonites as a race don't really inspire fear or dread the way the Zentraedi, Masters, and Invid did.
The alpha/beta combination in CG was disappointing. The look of them was a step down form the original design. Very blocky and not aerodynamic. Not sleek at all.
8.DIRECTING
At this point does it really matter?
I will say that the original series is going on what ,25 years now, and the action sequences from it STILL blow away what was done with the Toy CGI mecha in SC. I am by no means suggesting you need to "Micheal Bay" the thing, but come on...
9.SCALE FROM 1-10
See # 8
10.FINAL THOUGHTS/OVERALL/WOULD LIKE TO SEE
Better reevaluate your target audience. Do you want Big tits, fluff, and flake or depth and a loyal following? Robotech had a formula. I'd go look in your drawers, and knick knack holders for the piece of paper you wrote that on. You are going to need it men...
There are plenty of Macross products that improve on the original, why are Robotech fans made to suffer like this?
If Robotech productions keep going this direction I can't see people like me, original fans, sticking with it much longer. I'd be much happier taking my standard collection as is and ending the canon with Scott flying off into space by himself...
One last point. I've read this in several places on this forum and am frankly shocked:
"Robotech is character driven, mecha isn't as important as the characters..."
This couldn't be further from the truth. While I agree that RT is character driven it is equal parts Mecha / Design driven. Whoever it was that said that or believes it doesn't get it. You have to have both. Robotech is Mecha. Mecha is Robotech. That is not gramatically correct, but you get my meaning.
I think this is a big reason I was disappointed by SC...

I find all this talk about how the breast size of the women and the size of men to be very funny. It's art people, thats just the way the character designer draws. Get over it. If people are offended by they way a cartoon character is drawn then they can a)become an animator and create there on designs or b) not watch it and or c) get there mind out of the gutter and enjoy it for what it is Art. Personally I like the new charactor designs compared to the original ones of Robotech. But thats my opinion. However I have lived in Japan and I have visited Korea several times and I can tell you there is a reason why the characters (designed by a Korean studio)look the way they do.

...and dandy. I would agree with you if there weren't any relationship between SC and the original Robotech. Unfortunately there is. After 22 years of associating the characters of the series with a certain look, that look becomes the characters. So when every female approaches a 34 DDD that tends to fly in the face of what has come before it and the associations long time fans (The real base of the audience) made with the characters. The animation IS the character.
I don't really care WHY they look that way. I just hope they don't in the future. If you think the design of the characters can be excused by blaming a contract Korean design studio you let the real culprits off the hook, namely HG and their production staff. They have overall control over every design facet in the product, and the decision ultimately resides with them.
If what you suggest were true then SC would just be a cheap Korean knock off of Robotech. It shouldn't be.
Like I said before there is a formula to the Series that made up Robotech. It is pretty simple. It hasn't been followed in SC.

...on art. As an artist, art would be an anatomically drawn breast that compliments and resembles the natural form of the female figure...see anything by Masamune Shirow.
At best the anatomy in SCs is abstract art.

Subject: Top 10 Reasons to Stop Worrying and Love The Shadow Chronicles

Hi there everybody! As the new guy in town, I feel it's my duty to tell you my Top 10 reasons to stop worrying and love the shadow chronicles. Here goes:
10. First off, It's a non-paper based Robotech project that ACTUALLY GOT FINISHED. If thats not a miracle then what is?
9. Admit it guys, Ariel and Janice were 10 times hotter here than in TOS and the Sentinels
8. Vince looks alot better here too. (Those sentinels-era Gollum eyes still freak me out)
7. Annie is nowhere to be seen!
6. Every previous Robotech incarnation has had an awesome score and Shadow Chronicles is no exception. Scott Glasgow has truly done an incredible job.
5. Cyclones Need I say more?
4. Louie Nichols, one of the few bright stars in the saga of the Southern Cross graces us with his presence.
3. The dogfights. I know I'm gonna get some crap for this one, but for what the veritech battles lacked in detail, they more than made up for in dynamics.
2. "All this technology and they can't put in a damn elevator??!!" C'mon, I know you all laughed at that one.
1. Lastly, this movie has surely gotten the ball rolling for future Robotech ventures on the big (hopefully) and small screens.
So.....yeah. That about sums it up. Now I know that the movie doesn't quite follow the so-called "formula" that previous Robotech productions have. But lets keep in mind, those were all made over 20 years ago. Just like every other Sci-fi franchise, Robotech must adapt with the times and I think Shadow chronicles has done a superb job . (Remember, It could've been Robotech 3000 )
Comments anyone? | |
