all I know is During the "Shadow Chronicles" Premiere at the HG theater I remember Brian Singer (director of the X-men ) told a group of us "Fans" how excited he would be to see the Macross Saga on the Big Screen! I have to agree with him Macross Saga or Bust!!

HOLY COW!!! Bryan Singer's a Macross fan! I thought he was only a huge Star Trek and Superman fan but I didn't expect him to be a Macross saga fan too!--that's really cool!

Memo, you should check out the "Can we start a mecha casting call?" discussion topic. Far too many points are made there to go over again here, but I am all for the original VF, or at least a very slight modernization.

With the writers strike going on, I wonder if it is going to set this back or if Tommy is going to just take up the reins and do the writing instead

I have been led to believe there are usually a whole slew of loose ends (legal and logistical) they need to tie up before they can even start to get a script going so hopefully if this strike can be resolved soon enough it won't effect the movie at all.

Subject: WB should work with BW/Nue for first movie
Posted on: November 13, 2007 - 7:51:44 PM

Am I crazy in thinking that if they want to make a "Robotech" Movie, and make it good, they should just try to make a live action version of Macross: DYRL? (or something similar to it). I think starting in the macross saga would be the best option, and there is already an EXCELLENT movie version of the macross saga. If the first movie succeeds (which is should, at least critically, if they do a darn good job of adapting Macross: DYRL to live action), then they can can do Southern Cross, and Mospaeada for a trilogy.

I think just trying to re-tell the first six episodes, or the first third of the Macross Saga into a movie would be an extremely bad idea. There isn't enough depth in the first six episodes to make a great movie. I also think starting in anywhere other than the macross saga, or to write a completely new universe with new characters, mecha, etc would also be a bad idea. They need to do something similar to what Macross: DYRL did.

I say that WB and Tobey should be buying rights to Macross, not Robotech for now (well, maybe just the name "Robotech"). If the first movie does excellent, then Harmony Gold will have no reason to complain, since WB will be going to them for rights for the 2nd and 3rd movies. They should be working with Bigwest and Studio Nue, instead of just Harmony Gold. This dumb copyright issue needs to be settled... it is so stupid and confusing.

Also, I forgot to mention that I know something similar has already been tried, with Macross
Final Outpost: Earth. Why was that project canceled last time? I don't remember...

All I am trying to say is that if this movie is going to be good, it should start with the Macross Saga, and it should have great story and character depth.

If WB thinks they can make a movie similar to Transformers (big, fighting robots with a lackluster story) with Robotech, they are making a gigantic mistake. Transformers is different because (I know I might get flamed for this) it did not have much character or story depth. I didn't feel emotionally attached to any of the characters in all of Transformers animated series (and new live action movie as well). Transformers, to me, feels like a show that only exists to try and help sell their toys. Robotech (and Macross) is so much more than that.

JAPANESE MACROSS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ROBOTECH.

INITIALLY, ROBOTECH IS MORE WELL KNOWN AROUND THE WORLD.

Got the word a few weeks ago. My happy curve is the same as the depressive curve now days. I got drunk. Is there no greater way of destroying Robotech then to subjecting it to a live acting film in today’s chewing gum industry? Is there a way to do one movie out of 25 episodes? Even Lord of the Ring Peter Jackson couldn’t pull that one off.
Is there any director left in Holly Wood (except James Cameron and Ridley Scott) who takes Sci Fi seriously now days?

Anyone played Chris Roberts Wing Commander I & II from 92. If compared to the movie with almost the same title, that’s where I think we are heading. I’m sorry guys.

But one could pray.

Robotech Prayer.

I will pray that I don’t have to watch a film made on a script written for a 6 year old (no offence to the children). Pray that the guns sound like Iraq 2003 and not pheteeew, pheteew. Pray that I can recognise the mechas and feel the thrill of first time seeing a VT in IRL HD resolution on screen. Recognise the cockpit, experience the Excalibur and the other Destroids. Visit the room of Minmay and see her little yellow pokemon bunny in detail beside her bed. Pray that the SFX and art directors collect the following art books for reference; This is Anime, all three volumes, and the Macross Perfect memory. Pray that I will see the Petit Cola machine terrorise pedestrians. Pray that I will not make it in my pants when I see the towering view of the old Red, White and Blue (salute) SDF-1 in her sheer size or the Zentraedi massing in darkness of space. Pray that the main characters are not played by Tom Cruise and Brittany Spears. Pray that the film will begin playing Ulpio Minuccis Original Robotech score preformed by the London Symphony Orchestra.
I will pray, that out there are more like me.
Amen.

No matter what happens you can’t rob me and my sweet cornflakes on that sunny morning 07:00, Apr 1st, 1987 on Super Channel (here in Europe at least) cable, programme: Super Time Club, starting two hours of cartoons with Robotech Macross. Or so, rob me of my DVD boxes or books.

Sincerely Yours

Myself

I hope this does happen. We have the bad *** tech to pull the movie off. But who the hell will play that singer/actress? Not many people will be able to pull a dancing, singing, actress part off. Hell half of the problem is finding the people that can truly sing.
Who would make a good Lisa Hayes? Liam Neason would make a possible actor for one of the older characters, but he is soo picky.

Subject: Minmei found ?
Posted on: November 15, 2007 - 6:26:21 AM

AS a matter of fact, when thinking of it I have always kept my eyes open for actors/actresses that look the characters of Robotech. I mean not searching but like; I wonder what Rick Hunter would have look liked if he where an IRL Person. The last 10 years has been like – nada - nothing. But to my surprise I found what appears to be a Minmei lookalike. Now Minmei might be a hard one to find and I was actually betting on first find Captain Gloval or Lisa Hayes as there has passed some interesting actors in B movies etc.

Problem is that many associates with Minmei being oriental but in my imaginations she does not look like that in the Animated series so I was completely baffled when I was sitting with my family watching Gilmore Girls suddenly saying; -Darn thats Lynn Minmei!

Now nobody knew what I was mumbling about but hey, take a look at Krysten Ritter:

Sweet as an angel. Try to get some episodes so you can see her in front of the camera .

People keep saying she's asian because Minmei is Chinese. She doesn't exactly look like it in the series because anime characters have their own nationality separate of being caucasian or asian.

The hardest part of casting Minmei is going to be her singing, but they'll probably just get a voice double for that. Getting a Chinese woman in her teens or early adulthood will fulfill all of the appearance concerns.

because she IS intended to be Asian by the artists. In Macross she is Half Japanese/Chinese, in Robotech she is full Chinese.

Aside from that, physically - the art of Minmei embodies the Japanese Pop Idol Kawaii (Cute) Ideal Girl - with big doe eyes, innocent & sweet looks & has a cutesy voice.
This is a modern example of that ideal kawaii look they want, even though the girl is French/Filipino/Chinese

For me personally, never once did I think Minmei was not Asian. The way she acts, her background and especially her name says it all. Even her hairdo looks like Mari Ijima's (orig VA for Minmay) or like any other Japanese Pop Idol of that time (early 80s).
