YOU COULD GO THE STAR TREK MOVIE ROUTE...
KEEP THE BRIDGE SIMPLE.
5 IN STAR TREK (DOC WAS ALWAYS IN AND OUT)THATS 6
6 IN SDF-1 BRIDGE
ENGENEERING
1 FOR STAR TREK,SCOTTY, AND ANY EXTRAS YOU SEE AROUND.
1 FOR SDF-1, DR.LANG, AND ANY TECHS AROUND AS EXTRAS.
INSTEAD OF TEH BRIDGE BEAMING DOWN TO ANYPLACE..
FILL IN WITH THE PILOTS.
AND OF COURSE YOUR VILLANS.
TAR TREK HAD MANNY..BUT CONSENTRATED ON TEH ENEMY BRIDGE...
ROBOTECH CAN CONSENTRATE WITH ONLY BREETAI AND A FEW OF HIS MEN, KHYRON, MIRIYA, AND ANY OTHER. AS ENEMY PILOTS.
HEARD OF LIVE ACTION G.I. JOE? IF THEY CAN WORK WITH THE CHARACTERS...AND THEY HAVE MANNY, AND BATTLE SCENES.... ROBOTECH SHOULD ATTEMPT TO DO THE SAME. BEFORE SOMEOEN ELSE DOES IT.
EVERY MOVIE OUT THERE HAS AT LEATS A ROBOTECH FAN WHO PROBABLY (I AM NOT SAYING IN CERTANTY) PUT IN A LITTLE OF ROBOTECH.

The news of a possible live-action film based upon Harmony Gold’s production in the mid 1980’s both thrills me and frightens me at the same time. I have longed for the big hollywood flash and (hopefully) the depth of character that could be given to the franchise. At the same time I am afraid that my memories of youth will be betrayed for the sake of deadlines, financial issues, and short sighted criticism. Hollywood has a tendency to emphasize the things that make them the most money in the short term and for a franchise like this it will be the toys. In order for them to make the viewers, kids and adults alike, buy the toys they are going to have to have a large amount of interaction with the mecha. The balance between character development and action scenes will be a difficult one to achieve in the brief timeframe alotted to the movie.
I remember watching the programs as a child and getting very attatched to the characters, even the ones I hated, as well as the mecha. One of the things I liked so much about them in comparison to the other animated features of their time was the full range of perception to the situations that was presented. It was never a black and white option, every decision weighed heavy on the characters and the results were not always favorable. The good guys and bad guys blurred into a myriad of grays and you had to at least sympathize in some way for the aggressors at certain points of the show.
Love, espionage, insanity, mecha, understanding, diplomacy… The themes were endless, the machines were just the tools that got us to pay attention as our hyperactive minds started to cool. Essentially, the “Robotech” Saga was about humanity and the will to survive though the harshest of times and the ingenuity through which we manage to do it. The concept of cultures doing battle with each other, not just civilizations. The use of music was vital to the series (and many of the Macross sequels), will it be for the movie?
Will the writers even start with the traditional Macross opening? Perhaps they would choose to start with the Megazone 23 side project that got waylayed? Or with the Sentinels project? Maybe even the reconstruction period between Macross and Southern Cross? How about Zor’s betrayal and escape from the Robotech Master’s which ultimately led him to crash the SDF on earth. The possibilities are endless, the only certainty will be the fact that there will be mecha in it; lets just hope the characters are worth coming back to two years later.
Thanks for reading,

Subject: Now that I've had time to digest, My thoughts on a Robotech Movie

A Robotech live-action movie should not re-tell any of the stories fromt the animated series--the last thing fans needs is another version of the story to argue over. A like action movie--like the dead animated movie over twnty years ago--should tell as as-of-yet untold story.
I, for one, would like to see some aspect of the Sentinels missions--preferrably one that relates to the new movies. FOr instance, the "liberation" of Haydon IV. We could see mannequin-faces Haydonites through most of the film, but near the end (during all the reelations, such as Janice and Rem), the race could shuck-off thier masks to reeal their real faces--the mannequin faces could be used as a plot device, and symbol of invid opression. It could be a movie to show the subtle transtion of the Haydonites from ally to enemy, without contradicting the events of the Prelude comics. It could also "correct" some of the retro-active errors that were created in the novels by the release of Shadow Chronicles--maia's age, for one, and common knowledge of the haydonite race (only a handful of sentinels were present for the liberation, the others were on Garuda).
The film could open on Garuda, and use the war there to set up the Sentinels story. Act one would be the posoning of key mmembers of the army (the Hunters and Rem), and act two would begin with a small force of Sentinels "surrendering" to the Inid on Haydon IV for medical assistance. Reference to the continued conflict on Garuda would place the bulk of the Sentilens there.
The Earth, and the situation thereof, could be mentioned (enought to set the time frame), but it wouldn't be the focus of the story.
Robotech: Shadow of the Sentinels "When the Robotech Masters fell at Earth, the Sentinel Alliance was already fighting the Invid threat that had grown in their wake. Before the United Earth Expeditionary Forces can save their own, planet, they first have to fight their way home..."
In the end, two more planets (Haydon and Garuda) will have been liberated, with only three left (Spheris, Peryton, and Optera itself). An "epilogue" could include Lancer shipping out with the First Earth Reclamation Force.
One sequel could be the war on Spheris, and the rise of Scott Bernard (including his relationship with Marlene Rush, and her little brother Marcus); like Lancer, though, these would have to be cameos. I'd like to see Jack, Karen, Rick, and Lisa, etc. as the main characters. It could include the death of Lynn Kyle, as the events of issue one of Prelude near the end. This sequel would end with Scott and Marlene leaving.
A second sequel (because Hollywood loves trilogies) could retell the events of the Prelude comics from the Sentinel Alliance perspective. We could follow Tesla from Spheris to Optera and back to Peryton, referencing the events of the Prelude series (Edwards on Optera with the Regent, fighting ff Tesla's fleet before the arrival of Vince Grant)
[see my fan fic "Lang's Report" for my ideas on the timing of the Sentinels mission]

I would care less if it would end up like Battlefield Earth. Now if the movie IS coming out - really - Alone the thought is just cool
For sure it will allow those who never heard about RT/Macross to get into it.

Subject: Macross Saga is the ONLY option for L-A film

First off, thank you Real Time Being for your comments on the Macross Saga. Of the three, Macross was the most "human" story, and as far as I'm concerned, the best story for film adaptation. I'm afraid I have to disagree with those that propose other story arcs for the film. No other aspect of Robotech could be presented to the general public and elicit the same emotional connection that Macross could. The Sentinels and other story arcs have too much history behind them that the general public won't have any knowledge of to make it appealing to them. You might as well create a brand-new sci-fi movie that happens to have transformable mecha, and that kind of movie would just be accused of hording in on the Transformers movie's success. At least with Macross, we start with a world much like our own, rife with war and dissent. The SDF-1 represented hope for a world ready to tear itself apart, even if that hope was based in mutual fear of the unknown. This sentiment may be for the wrong reasons, and full of hypocrisy, but that is something that we, as a world culture, are vastly familiar with.
To avoid going on forever on this subject, let me say that however you spin it, Macross is the only way to go. I could see an arguement for The New Generation (which is decent as a stand-alone story), which could lead into the Sentinels, etc., but as a fan, I WANT to see Roy Fokker in his VF-1S blasting Zentraedi to ash!

There are lot of stories on this forum but different threads how to make a live-action movie out of Macross Saga. Of course, Macross should should be basis for the movie. At least for the first one.
Few years ago I posted my view of how it should begin.
The Year 1999 (maybe changed to "our days")
On the screen we see crew of a submarine on duty. According to books and adaptations let it be "K-142". Suddenly radar shows an undentified activity in 20 km. Later on alert on board of the ship and then "bang"! All submarine systems luckily stay in tact after shocking wave caused by incredible explosion. After emersion captains decides to investigate the area of the explosion. After all it is clear that UFO crashed onto small island nearby. Cpt. Glovalskyi decides to hand this area to UN forces directly.

Memo, you should check out the "Can we start a mecha casting call?" discussion topic. Far too many points are made there to go over again here, but I am all for the original VF, or at least a very slight modernization.

With the writers strike going on, I wonder if it is going to set this back or if Tommy is going to just take up the reins and do the writing instead

I have been led to believe there are usually a whole slew of loose ends (legal and logistical) they need to tie up before they can even start to get a script going so hopefully if this strike can be resolved soon enough it won't effect the movie at all.
