Subject: I recieved mine today!
Posted on: August 27, 2008 - 9:22:28 PM

I popped it into the BVD player as soon as I got home and I'm happy to say that the Blu release is awesome!

The case is pretty much the same as that of the special edition, only the text and stuff that was on the external slip case is now on the cover. Everything is pretty much the same, with the same sharp looking gold lettering, they just shuffled stuff around to make it all fit on the smaller case cover. I will say that the info on the back looks more well presented then it did on the back of the special edition.

After popping the disc in the first thing you see is an all new animated menu with cool windows flashing up showing wireframe models of the space craft and text info with the ship's name or model, and a brief history, WAY too cool.

I scrolled over to the special features and started the movie with the comentary track rolling.

I can't really say anything about the 5.1 mix as I don't have surround sound yet , but I can say that the video transfer was excellent, with only a small amount of video noise in only one scene, the flashback at the beginning. Everything else looked pristine.

So what exactly will the blue ray have that the other DVD does not?

Higher resolution for increased clarity especially on large screen tvs like mine, Blu also has a wider color gamut then dvd, and it has uncompressed sound. Also with the Blu release you don't have to switch out the discs when you want to check out the special features thanks to Blu's rather large storage capacity.

I don't understand what kind of quality you can get with cartoon?

RSC is fairly highly detailed as far as cartoons go, especially the CG ships where on the blu version you can clearly see the fine details like the armor plates on the ships or the faint weathering on Scott's Alpha. Also, with the blu release and the higher resolution all of the fine lines that make up the 2d characters are represented cleanly rather then being slightly jagged as with dvd releases.

but are they going to re-master (Why do they need re-mastering since they were most likely created on computer and are directly ported) them in high res, and what will be the advantage?

RSC was created in HD on computers, it did not need to be remastered for the Blu release, in fact, more work was required to lower the movie's resolution for the dvd release then was required to transfer it directly to blu.

Subject: Rendering, Resolution and Color
Posted on: August 28, 2008 - 5:13:23 PM

For those of those who don't understand the difference, I have some answers too!

1. Rendering: When 3D Animation is created is rendered a certain quality, Blu-Ray makes it so we can see more detail and sharper models and rendered animations because it was originally made in HD, and on DVD it was down-converted to fit those little kiddie screens.

2. Resolution: Resolution is sometimes called the enemy of media because a low resolution is total crud-dom compared to 1080p(1920x1080 progressive, one of the highest resolutions known to man, and progressive makes the frames per second more fluid). Resolution means more pixels which means you see a larger and more detailed image, and in some HDTVs you can see more vibrant colors that make certain scenes more authentic(Like better lighting situations).

Color: Like I said the higher the resolution the more detailed...but why? A single pixel is a square featuring one color....the more pixels the more color depth, and that means more detail for your money because the color blends in better with a higher resolution....thus it's a win-win situation!

I triple-dipped on Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles. This is probably the first time I've more than double-dipped since Star Wars and Blade Runner. And this third time was worth it.

The Blu-Ray version of R:TSC looks amazing. Kudos to Harmony Gold and DR Movie. I look forward to the sequel!

Once I purchase a PS3, RTSC will be the first BD titles that I will purchase.

During one of the rt panels I was at (Anime Expo), Tommy said they were working on cel-shading more, or parts of the movie. Did they actually do that?

NO

TOMMY SHOWED A COMPARISON OF HOW THE NEXT MOVIE WOULD LOOK WITH MORE CELL SHADING. THAT WHEN THEY GET INTO PRODUCTION WITH SHADOW RISING IT WOULD LOOK MUCH BETTER.

Do anyone know if the Shadow Chronicles BD is region coded? Or more precise: can I see it with a European Playstation 3 (original launch version)?

I don't know why people are so excited about this. RTSC was such an awful attempt at reviving such a beautiful childhood memory. RTSC did worse for Robotech than SW episode I did for the old trilogy. All the magic was lost in big breasted women and poor animation (especially the space scenes.) Now in blu ray people are paying more money for the same poor experience. Total failure.

I still like Robotech, but if anything good is to be produced in the future, producers must look back and remember was it was all about.

In order to believe, you must not know.

I triple-dipped on Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles.

You can allways give one of the others as a present!

What's on the Blu-ray version that wasn't on the privious Collector's Edition release?

The Blu version has everything that was on the Collectors edition, and adds some some footage about the Mocap used for Rt3000 in addition to the included Rt3000 promo.
Nevermind the 1080p/uncompressed 5.1 awesomeness and the all new interactive menues.

Do anyone know if the Shadow Chronicles BD is region coded?

It's region A, Europe is region B, I don't think you're player will play it.

producers must look back and remember was it was all about.

lol, I bet if you asked a hundred different Robotech fans you'd get a hundred different answeres!

Was this movie any good? I have yet to buy it because I don't want my $30+ to be a waste. I loved the show and I wanted some feedback before buying

I didn't think it was worth buying. It's very choppy as far as story goes, there's issues with canon in the story, and while there are some good things in it (voice actors, music), it doesn't have the "Robotech" feel. I'm not gonna say if you should buy it or not, that's just my opinion. I didn't buy it, but saw it to know that I wasn't missing anything.

Well RTSC I enjoyed on dvd & need to get the Collectors edition (is there a UK release?).
As for the Blu Ray version, got the TV but not got a BR player yet,so will be on my list of To Buy,when I do.
Shame some of you didn`t like RTSC but hey we all have our own views. For me it was a Lot of fun & worked really well. Though as I saw the 3 seperate animations before the RT saga was done,i`m biased to be open minded.
