Subject: What do we call ourselves (as fans)?
Started on: January 24, 2003 - 9:51:26 AM

Here's an interesting question for everyone. Since Star Trek fans are Trekkies, etc. etc. etc. What are Robotech fans called? Is there an official designation? Or is there no need for an official designation?

NOT "Techie" or "Robotechie". I've always hated that. The name came from letter published on the letters page of a Comico Robotech TMS issue (I dont remember what issue) back in the 80's and has kinda stuck ever since. It's not very original because it sounds too much like Trekie. I prefer plain old "Robotech Fan".

I think that we as fans do not have to be designated by a dorky name like "trekkies". I think that if you are a true fan you shouldn't have to have a special name, but people would just know that you are a Robotech fan...

Shouldn't we be called 'Botties or Arties (RTs, get it?) or something?! Or maybe a name derived from "Harmony Gold"... Goldies? Harmers? HarGos?!

Surely we can come up with a more creative list of possible choices.

I mean, for Pete's sake you make it sound like we're in competition with the Trekkies to come up with a better fan name.

My point was that someone I know in the field of British literature uses the term "Trekkies" for almost any type of fanatic. It just got me thinking, so I decided to ask.

In the whole scheme of things, it really doesn't matter. Just plain "Robotech fans" work with me.

instead of trying to come up with something awkward and contrived and then getting everyone to say it? And aren't we kind of past the point of no return in worrying about being a nerd when we're fans of something like Robotech anyway?

I'm happy with being known as an Otaku to tell the truth. Which is a commonly accepted term for any anime fanatic these days. It's seperates from "Trekkies" and "Trekkers" which have nothing to do with Robotech, or even Anime. They're Star Trek fanatics! Completely different area of Sci-Fi! Though I have to admit the Trekkies have paved the way for the rest of us. They have their fan clubs, where they dress up in star trek costumes for meetings and assign their members ranks. And they took the flak from the mundanes back in the 80's when the clubs were forming from watching re-runs.

If someday I decided to start/join a Robotech fan club. Then I'll identify myself through them. Something like "Corporal Knightsrune, RDF Alpha Squadron" or "Corporal Knightsrune, Robotech Corps of Engineers" or some such thing. Until then, Otaku is just fine with me.

How about Protoculture Addicts? Worked for the fanzine- which is still in print, by the way.

since Robotech has three generations why not just name the fans according to their favorite series?
example : if you're a macross fan, you're either a Zent or a flyboy.

My opinion is truthfully who needs a label if your a big Robotech fan you know it and that is all that matters truthfully from what I seen in the past with other sci fi franchices it seems like alot of them that go by the label actually are ones that jumped on the band wagon.(i.e. Trekies=original fans, Trekers=Bandwagoners.

That's the simple way to put it. I always thought that was the most applicable term. ^__^
